Will my old XP Computer run Windows 7?

What do I need to consider when upgrading to Windows 7?

If you are interested in upgrading to Windows 7 the first thing you should do is download the Windows 7 upgrade advisor. This program is created by Microsoft and will check your PC for compatibility issues. It checks both your software and hardware. It will tell you where you have compatibility issues. Most PCs already running on Vista will have an easer time going to Windows 7 than XP users. Sorry XP users you are in for more work. This is the price you will have to pay for not upgrading to Vista when Vista came out. But, I will say you did save a lot of pain by not upgrading to Vista. Vista users can remember how difficult it was going from XP to Vista. It was not a pleasant experience. Many people gave Microsoft a bad wrap for that. And as a result Microsoft wanted to make sure it does not happen again.

Microsoft has put a lot of research and development into making it much easer going from Vista to Windows 7.

Windows 7 has what is called an XP mode that allows you to run using a virtualization technology. Your XP Virtual PC will run directly from the Windows 7 desktop. But there are many requirements and although it sounds easy and very simple it is not. Due the many requirements I would not go this route. In addition, in some cases it can be very difficult to tell if your PC meets all the requirements.

After running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor you find you have hardware compatibility issues you will have choices to make. If it’s an older model printer you may decide to donate it to your favorite charity and purchase a new one. Or you may wish to keep running XP and slowly transition over to new devices at your own pace. The Windows 7 upgrade advisor will have identified what you need and you can slowly replace your older devices with new ones that are Windows 7 ready. For software, again Vista users you are in luck. Most programs written for Vista will also work in Windows 7. In addition, Windows 7 has a Program Compatibility troubleshooter. For any programs that are identified as having compatibility issues you can try the compatibility troubleshooter.
